Field of work
Veronica Ekström is a social worker and Associate Professor in Social Work. She is currently Head of the Department of Social Work. Veronica has a strong interest in higher education pedagogy and has previously served as program director and led pedagogical development initiatives within the department. She is the initiator of the national network for higher education pedagogy in social work programs, which she now co-leads together with Michael Sjöqvist at Jönköping University. In 2020, she received the Pedagogical Award from Ersta Sköndal Bräcke University College.
Research
Veronica’s research interests concern social services, and more specifically, social services’ work with intimate partner violence. She is part of the research program Sivin Barn, which aims to create conditions for, and contribute to, the development of a child-centered coordinated intervention system against violence towards children in close relationships, with a focus on social work. The program is funded by Forte. Within this research program, Veronica has led a project on quality in shelters for women exposed to violence. She has also carried out several evaluations of collaborative projects between social services and the police.
Since 2016, Veronica has collaborated with researchers at Karolinska Institutet on a range of projects concerning digital support interventions for individuals with alcohol use disorders and their family members. Since 2024, she has also participated in a KI-led project evaluating the implementation of Feedback Informed Treatment – FIT – within social services.
Teaching
Currently, Veronica mainly teaches social work law in the social work program and courses on intimate partner violence at both undergraduate and advanced levels. She also has extensive experience in supervising and examining theses at both undergraduate and advanced levels, as well as supervising doctoral students at both Marie Cederschiöld University and Karolinska Institutet.
