Field of work
Åsa Kneck is an Associate Professor in Nursing Science with extensive experience in research, higher education pedagogy, and clinical nursing practice. Her research focuses on experiences related to long-term illness, self-care, and the nurse’s supportive and educational role. Her work highlights and problematizes the conditions and barriers to equitable care and health, with particular attention to individuals in marginalized groups. She has experience working in interdisciplinary teams and using various co-creative methods with the populations concerned. Åsa currently supervises three doctoral students.
Research
Åsa's research centers on the conditions necessary for achieving equitable health and healthcare, with a particular focus on groups who live with or are at risk of experiencing poorer health. She is especially interested in how power, participation, and rights influence access to good health, healthcare, self-care, and empowerment. Access and availability to arenas that are essential for health, such as healthcare and organized sports, are of special interest.
Åsa is the research leader for an interdisciplinary co-creative project aimed at promoting health equity for women experiencing homelessness. In this project, participants’ own knowledge and lived experiences are seen as essential for the development of healthcare, support, and social interventions.
In her research, Åsa uses creative and visual methods for data collection and co-creation, with the aim of enabling participation from individuals whose voices are often excluded in traditional research formats. These methods are developed in collaboration with participants to ethically and accessibly capture complex life situations and experiences of vulnerability. Her work is characterized by interdisciplinary collaboration with researchers in sociology, ethics, nursing science, and the social sciences. Åsa has a particular interest in how participation can be fostered—not only in healthcare encounters but also within research and society at large—as a means toward more equitable life conditions and healthcare that respects everyone’s right to health.
Equitable Health for Women Experiencing Homelessness – This interdisciplinary and co-creative project focuses on the conditions for equitable health and healthcare, with a focus on women’s life situations, needs, and resources.
Health and Sports for All – An interdisciplinary project that focuses on participation in the sports movement, addressing issues related to physical activity, social relationships, organization, and gender. Åsa is the project leader and collaborates with Associate Professor Anders Kassman on several studies with various research designs.
Teaching
Since 2007, Åsa has had extensive experience in education and pedagogical development, with a particular focus on student-centered learning and quality in education. Through various roles—including program director, international coordinator, educational development leader, and course director for the undergraduate nursing program as well as for doctoral-level courses—she has contributed to the development of both programs and individual courses. Her work aims to ensure high-quality education with strong links to current research. She has a particular interest in promoting and making visible nursing science theories, concepts, and perspectives, as well as perspectives on sustainable development. Åsa also has experience as both supervisor and academic opponent.
