Field of work
Maria Eriksson defended her PhD in sociology at Uppsala University in 2004 with a thesis on family law and the tackling of fathers' violence. Maria has been a professor of social work since 2012, first at the then Mälardalen University and since 2017 at Marie Cederschiöld University. At the university, she has also held the position of Vice-Chancellor for Research and Third Cycle Education since 2023.
Research
One of Maria's primary research interests is how different forms of inequality impact upon policy and practice as regards parenthood and children’s rights. Issues related to men’s violence against women and children are central in this research. Ongoing research includes the six-year research programme Coordinated Interventions against Violence in Close Relationships (SIVIN Child), and projects on matching in foster care placement of children, and on emergency care placement as a solution for younger children, with a focus on support during transitions from the perspectives of children, emergency care parents and professionals. Recently completed studies include an evaluation of the violence prevention program VIP – Important Interesting Person aimed at people with intellectual disabilities, and an evaluation of the Relational Violence Center in Stockholm (RVC) with a focus on interventions for children.
Teaching
Maria is involved as a teacher in the social work programme, especially in parts of the programme that concern children's agency and violence in intimate relationships. Maria's teaching also includes the master's programme in social work with a specialization in violence in intimate relationships, as well as the third cycle education /doctoral program where she both leads or participates as teacher in courses and supervise doctoral students.
Collaboration and Engagement
Maria has been a member of the Stockholm Academy of Social Services since 2008, and a member of the research network of National Board of Health and Welfare's violence perpetrator coordination. Previous collaboration assignments include developing the “iRiSk’” risk and safety interviews for abused children, on behalf of the National Board of Health and Welfare, and expert assignments regarding family law risk assessments, as well as publications to support municipalities and regions on quality in violence prevention work with men and on children who have experienced violence, on behalf of the Swedish Association of Local Authorities and Regions.
