Field of work

Josefin Bäckström is an associate professor in caring sciences, a recognised university teacher and senior lecturer in nursing, with a graduate diploma in primary healthcare specialist nursing. Josefin's background includes extensive experience from psychiatric care, where she has engaged in teaching, research, and clinical work as a registered nurse. Previously, she has worked nationally with quality assurance in higher education in her role as an investigator at the Swedish Higher Education Authority (UKÄ).

Josefin Bäckström earned her PhD from Uppsala University in 2013 with a dissertation on the experiences of family members of individuals with severe burn injuries. The focus was on psychological symptoms, health-related quality of life, and experiences and need for support both during hospitalization and after discharge. Severe burns can serve as a model for other extensive physical injuries requiring long and demanding recovery processes, making the research findings applicable in other healthcare contexts.

Josefin's current research is conducted in collaboration with various projects in psychiatric care, primary care nursing, and leadership in nursing practice. She is particularly interested in the causes and factors that influence nurses' ability to practice their profession. She has experience with both quantitative and qualitative research methods, with an emphasis on qualitative approaches.

Josefin Bäckström has been teaching at university level since 2007, primarily in psychiatric-mental health nursing, as well as in leadership and the organization of nursing. In her teaching, she strives to integrate research with active collaboration with the healthcare sector and the broader society. In 2024, she was appointed a Distinguished Teacher at Luleå University of Technology, a distinction awarded to teachers who demonstrate particularly high pedagogical competence and a deliberate, systematic approach to developing teaching and student learning.

At Marie Cederschiöld University, Josefin teaches at both undergraduate and graduate levels and serve as the program director for the specialist nursing program with a focus on home healthcare. She is also involved in the Nordplus network Nordic/Baltic Advanced Practice Nursing Educators, which aims to develop the role of advanced practice nurses.

Josefin has extensive experience in collaborating with the healthcare sector, particularly in the development of nursing leadership. Since 2019, she has been a board member of the Swedish Society of Nursing and chair of the Magnet in Sweden steering group, which promotes and implements the Magnet model in Swedish healthcare.

Additionally, she regularly contributes as an educator in continuing education programs on nursing leadership for practicing nurses, primarily at Uppsala University Hospital and within Region Stockholm.
