Field of work
Henrik Lerner is a Senior Lecturer and Associate Professor in One Health with a focus on health, care ethics and view of life.
Research
His research mainly focuses on three areas:
1. Definitions of the consensus concept of health
Health can be defined in many different ways. Here, the focus is to study how health is defined in different professions and disciplines. Not only human health is concerned, but health definitions used for animals, plants and ecosystems are also in focus. The research has tried to find a working nomenclature for the health definitions that exist in the different professions and disciplines, as well as analyze their advantages and disadvantages.
2. Values and ethics in interdisciplinary health strategies such as One Health
One Health strategies are inter- or transdisciplinary health strategies that promote the health of humans, animals, plants, and ecosystems. They are advocated by the World Health Organization, among others. Part of the research analysed the underlying values and scientific focus of the different strategies. The work on that analysis identified a lack of ethical discussion within the strategies and the current research focuses on finding ethical models that are inclusive.
3. Human-animal relations and health
In healthcare, animals can be helpers in promoting health. When animals are included in a care situation, it is important that all participants feel good. The research has therefore mainly been about how interventions with animals can be evaluated in a holistic way, i.e. with regard to both humans and animals.
