Research at the institute focuses on two main themes. One is Evaluation, methodology and quality development in evidence-based social work. This is the study of social factors behind the current focus on transparency, quality assurance and evidence-based practice in social work, as well as the implementation of an evidence-based approach, and how research and methodology can enhance social work in a variety of contexts.

The second theme is Professional boundaries, user perspectives and the role of relatives in social work, health care and care. This studies the relationships that exist between the public and the private spheres in society’s ambitions to meet the needs of a variety of client and user groups; and the demand and need for social interventions among various groups. One area of focus is the scope for professionals to meet these needs; another is the scope for citizens to personally influence their own or their immediate family’s situation in life, sometimes in cooperation with professionals.
