Student active learning during the supervision process

This research project studies student active learning during the supervision process of students’ independent degree projects within the framework of nursing education. Previous research shows that, during the supervision of the independent degree project, students often look for the right method or the right way to work, which in turn will lead to a correct degree project.

The academic focus in professional education is extremely important so that nursing students will be fully informed about research and evidence-based nursing before embarking on their future profession as a nurse. In higher education institutions it is mandatory to write an independent degree project within the framework of the nursing education program, and a scientific evaluation of the supervision process needs to be performed from the perspectives of both students and supervisors. The independent degree project leads to a bachelor’s degree.

This project focuses on how students’ expectations are affected during the supervision process in student active learning and if there is a connection between students’ expectations of the supervision process and perceived self-efficacy. Furthermore, the project focuses on students’ inner motivation and driving forces for their learning during the supervision process, and supervisors’ perceptions of their own role and competence.

The overall aim is to describe student active learning during the process of supervising a degree project within the framework of nursing education.

The research questions are:

1. Are students’ expectations affected during the supervision process using student active learning (STQ)?
2. Is there a connection between students’ expectations of the supervision process and perceived self-efficacy (GSE)?
3. Elucidate the students’ inner motivation and driving forces for their own learning in the supervision process (focus group interview).
4. Describe the supervisors’ perceptions of their role as a coach in student active learning during the supervision process (GSE & STQ).
5. Elucidate the supervisor's perception of his/her competence and his/her reflections on their role as coach during the supervision process (focus group interview).

The project is a collaboration between the higher education institutions Marie Cederschiöld University, Karlstad University, Jönköping University and Örebro University. Data collection is being conducted at all four higher education institutions through surveys and focus group interviews that will be completed in the spring of 2021.
